Why Fall Is a Good Time to Refresh Your Cabinets
The kitchen is where the holidays happen. Between family dinners, guests wandering in for a drink and everyone gathering around the island, the cabinets get a lot of attention this time of year. If yours look dated or worn, fall is a natural moment to do something about it, before the busy season starts and while the calendar still has room.
Refinishing gives dated or worn cabinets a clean, updated finish without the cost, mess or lead time of a full replacement. That makes it a practical way to change the feel of a kitchen or bathroom in time for company, instead of living with a long remodel through the holidays.
What Goes Into a Cabinet Refinishing Job
A cabinet finish only looks good and lasts if the steps underneath it are done properly. Here is how we work through a kitchen.
Doors Removed and Labeled
Doors, drawer fronts and hardware come off and get tracked back to their exact spot, so everything goes back where it started and lines up the way it should.
Cleaned, Sanded and Primed
Every surface is degreased, sanded and primed so the new finish actually bonds. Kitchen cabinets collect cooking residue and daily handling, and paint will not hold over a surface that has not been properly cleaned and prepared.
Finished and Reinstalled
Two finish coats go on, then everything is rehung and the hardware is reinstalled. If the cabinet boxes or nearby walls have dings or damage, our drywall and surface prep work can take care of the surrounding surfaces first.
Choosing a Sheen and a Color
We can work with every sheen, but not all of them suit cabinets. Satin is a durable sheen for doors and drawer fronts, and semi-gloss gives a more modern contrast look. Flat and matte finishes are better saved for walls and ceilings, and eggshell suits walls that get wiped down.
The colors we are asked for most are white or off-white, deep olive for an island, and charcoal or black for contrast. A white kitchen reads bright and clean, while a darker island gives the room a focal point that guests notice right away.
More Than Kitchens
We paint and refinish kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, islands and built-ins, including staining and wood finishing. If a guest bathroom is on your holiday list, the vanity is a smaller project that can make a real difference. When the cabinets are done, it is also a good time to refresh the room around them with some interior painting, and to update the doors and details with our doors, trim and woodwork service.
Getting on the Calendar Early
We are open Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm, and we accept credit cards as well as other merchant services. The weeks before the holidays tend to fill up, so reaching out early gives you the best chance of having the kitchen finished and the furniture and rooms back in order before guests arrive. We work around your schedule, and we walk the finished kitchen or bathroom with you before calling the job done.
