The Short Answer
Yes, prep comes first on every exterior job we do. Surfaces are cleaned, loose paint is scraped, gaps are caulked and bare spots are primed before the finish coats go on. It is the least glamorous part of painting a house, and it is the part that decides how the finished job looks. Color catches the eye on day one, but the preparation underneath is what the paint has to hold onto.
Step One: A Clean Surface
Paint needs a clean face to grip. Before any color goes on, we wash the surfaces and let them dry, so the paint goes onto the home itself and not onto a layer of grime. Washing is a service we offer on its own as well, and you can read how the methods differ on our pressure and soft washing page or in our post on pressure washing vs soft washing. Giving the surface time to dry matters, because we do not want to rush paint onto anything that is still wet.
Step Two: Scraping, Caulking and Priming
Once the surface is clean and dry, the real prep begins. Each of these steps does a different job.
Scraping Loose Paint
Old paint that is already lifting will not hold a new coat on top of it. We scrape away loose paint so the new finish is going over a sound surface rather than something that is about to let go.
Caulking Gaps
Gaps and seams are caulked before painting. Closing them up gives the finished job cleaner lines and a more complete look around trim, windows and doors.
Priming Bare Spots
Where the old paint has been scraped back to bare surface, we prime those spots before any color goes on. Primer is what lets the finish coats bond properly, so those areas do not end up looking different from the rest of the wall.
Different Surfaces, Different Prep
Siding, stucco, brick, wood, trim, doors, shutters, garages, porches and other outdoor structures are all part of what we paint. Siding, masonry and wood each take paint differently, so each surface gets the prep it needs before the finish coats go on. Wood trim and doors are cut in by hand so the lines stay crisp, and if your project includes a fence or deck, our fence and deck staining service follows the same idea of starting with a clean surface.
Why Skipping Prep Is a Bad Trade
It can be tempting to focus on the color and treat everything else as extra. But paint that goes over dirt, loose paint or open gaps is sitting on a weak foundation. Doing the prep properly is how a repaint looks right when it is finished, and it is why we treat it as part of the job rather than an add-on.
What to Expect When You Call
Getting started is simple. Call us or send a message, and we will set up a time to come look at the house and give you a free estimate. Seeing the property in person lets us look at the surfaces themselves, which is the best way to understand what the prep will involve. You can read more about the work on our exterior painting page.
